Caring For Your Parents


May is Older Americans Month, and in celebration of our elderly, the Allen County Council on Aging has partnered with PBS Channel 39, Aging and In-Home Services and the Allen County Public Library to bring an evening of information gathering to caregivers of seniors. The event will be held Thursday, May 8; 5:30 pm- 8:30 pm.; at the main branch (downtown Fort Wayne) of the Allen County Public Library.

 

Attendees are invited to gather in the Grand Hall to review information booths and for light refreshments. At 6:15, there will be a “welcome” in the Auditorium and attendees will be invited to attend a variety of workshops given by experts in various fields.

  •      Twyla Stech (State office of Senior Health Information Program) will speak on insurance needs of seniors.

  •      Dr. Anne Moore (St. Joseph Hospital) will speak on health care for seniors.

  •      Steve Adair (Beers, Mallers, Backs, and Salin, LLC) will talk about senior legal issues that should be discussed.

  •      Melissa Barile (State Alzheimer’s Association) will talk about the need for the caregiver to take care of him/herself.

  •      Sylvia Wade (Aging and In-Home Services) will speak about housing needs of seniors.

  •      Ranelle Melton (Allen County Council on Aging) will talk about transportation needs of seniors.

 Each workshop will be 40 minutes, with a question and answer session included. Attendees should be able to attend 3 workshops, as well as visit the information booths throughout the evening.

 

Additionally, the Allen County Public Library will provide lecture series in May, which will be related to the topics of aging and our loved ones.

  •      May 14: the discussion will be on Politics and Seniors

  •      May 21: Dorian Maples will discuss Interpersonal Relationships.

  •      May 28: the Allen County Public Library will discuss Genealogy.

  •      May 11: Maureen Widner (Aging and In-Home Services) and Ruth Force (State Alzheimer’s Association) will talk about Health Care and Taking Care of Yourself.

  •      May 18: Steve Adair (Beers, Mallers, Backs, and Salin, LLC) will talk about Insurance and Legal Issues for seniors.

  •      May 25: Ranelle Melton and Donna Cusick (both of Allen County Council on Aging) will discuss transportation and housing for seniors.

 **”A Closer Look “ will be live on these dates, and will be re-broadcast throughout May and June.
